Abstract

Based on three votive inscriptions found in the village of Pirler, approximately 90 km east of Nikaia, the relation of the rural settlement to the Mother goddess and to its patron is examined. Two of the inscriptions had already been published with short commentaries. The main deity of the ancient site of Pirler was Meter Skogene, whose epithet is mentioned in two of the texts. This epithet appears to have been derived from the name of the settlement. In the new inscription the settlement refers to itself as a demos. It also had a patron who apparently lived in the polis (Nikaia). The estates and business affairs of this anonymous patron were administered by his pragmateutes Trophimos. Some degree of dependence on both the patron and his pragmateutes can be inferred from the fact that both were included in the prayer of the demos added at the end of the new inscription.
