Abstract: Recent numismatic research leads to the idea that Roman Provincial Coins, minted by poleis in Asia Minor, which show the god Poseidon on the reverse, are to be connected with earthquakes in these regions. This principally plausible hypothesis is discussed here with regard to the Pisidian polis Prostanna. By collecting and analyzing epigraphical documents, literary sources and archaeological observations it is argued that Prostanna, like other settlements in Lycia, Pisidia and Caria, reacted on the experience with earthquakes and the threat of further earthquakes by worshipping Poseidon in his role as an earthshaker.

Keywords: Prostanna; Pisidia; Poseidon; Roman Provincial Coins; Antoninus Pius; earthquakes.
